Koala: backpack & bag

Hello! I want to share with you this pattern to make a mini koala backpack which can also be turned into a little crossbody bag with the way we'll place the strap, it is a very very easy and quick project and the kids are gonna love it!
We'll use yarn of any color you choose for your main color, I chose beige, black for the eyes and brown for the nose. We are also going to need a button, a little bit of white felt, tapestry needle, crochet hook 4 mm and 3 mm.

You can change the yarn weight as you like and the hook accordingly keeping in mind it will change the final size of your backpack. Mine is about 19 cm / 7,5 inches just the koala portion, plus the straps that will be as long as you wish to make them.

ABBREVIATIONS (U.S.):

R: round

mr: magic ring
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
inc: increase
dec: decrease
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
**: repeat to the end of round
[...] total stitches at the end of round

BAG:

With 4 mm hook.

We'll make two circles.

R1: 10 hdc in mr

R2: *hdc inc* [20]
R3: *1 hdc, hdc inc* [30]
R4: *2 hdc, hdc inc* [40]
R5: *3 hdc, hdc inc* [50]
R6: *4 hdc, hdc inc* [60]
R7: *5 hdc, hdc inc* [70]
R8: *6 hdc, hdc inc* [80]
R9: 80 hdc back loop only [80]

Break yarn, hide and secure loose ends once you have your first circle.

DON'T break yarn once you are done with the second one.

UNION:

Place the two circles with righ sides facing each other. We'll join them with slip stitches all around both circles leaving 18 stitches unworked so as to have an opening. Secure and hide loose ends. Now, turn your work inside out.

EYES:

With 3 mm hook.

R1: 4 sc in mr
R2: *sc inc* [8]

Make two small circles with felt and sew or glue one on to each eye.
Sew on the front of your backpack as you desire, I placed my eyes between R3-4 at the sides of the magic ring as a reference.

NOSE:

With 3 mm hook.

In mr: 2 ch, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 1 ch, 1 sl st.

Sew around the middle of the eyes but a little lower, I placed mi nose betwen R3-4 down from the magic ring.

CLOSURE:

With 4 mm hook.

5 ch
R1: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc

Break yarn leaving enough for sewing.
Sew on what on the top of what is going to be the back side, where you have your opening.
You are going to sew the button opposite your closure. Make sure your button can fit through the two fisrt stitches.

EARS:

Make two pompoms for the ears.
Sew them to the sides of the opening of your bag.

STRAP:

With 4 mm hook.

3 ch,
R1: 2 hdc, 1 ch, turn
R2: 2 hdc, 1 ch, turn
Repeat until you reach the desired lenght, mine measures around 160 cm long.

We'll place the strap through in between two stitches. First take an end of the strap through the lower right side, leave that end there inside the bag and grab the other end of the strap and place it through the upper right side, then the upper left side and finally through the lower left side, you'll now have the two ends of the strap on the inside of the bag, sew them together and secure and hide loose ends.
This way you can let it be a backpack with two straps or you can change it to one longer strap by pulling up the part we left inside.

Enjoy your cute koala backpack & bag.

    1. Glad you like it! I "divided" my bag in four "corners" (thinking from where an ordinary backpack would have the straps) and I made one long strap that I took from the inside of the bag to the outside and then from there to the inside but pulling it through the opposite corner. So, the idea is to have some lenght of the strap on the inside of the bag both at the upper and lower side. This kind of complicated way is to be able to pull the strap out from the inside and have one long strap, but you could definetely make it simpler and sew the strap at the top sides of the bag or make two straps for a backpack that you'll sew as an ordinary backpack. I really hope I could help with this but let me know it you questions!
